WHAT IS IT?
Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW’s) premier scholarship program. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is, American History: Our Hope for the Future. Prizes and scholarships can be awarded at the Post, District, state and national level. State winners receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., March 2-6, 2019, to tour the city, be honored by the VFW and its Auxiliary and receive their portion of $154,000 in national awards, the top scholarship being $30,000.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Any student in grades 9-12 may apply, as long as he/she is a US citizen or has applied for citizenship.
HOW TO APPLY:
Record an original 3-5 minute essay on an audio CD or a flash drive. Submit your typed essay, your recording, and your completed entry form to Mrs. Jones by noon on Tuesday, Oct. 31st. DESCRIPTION: The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship will receive applications beginning September 1st, 2018. Our Thomas Wolfe Scholarship application process involves two (2) steps:
1) an application to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill BY OCTOBER 15TH 2018; and, 2) an application to the Thomas Wolfe Scholarship by November 15th, 2018. Students must apply to both the University and the Scholarship to be considered. Preliminary screening will be completed in late January, 2019, with final screening concluding in early March, 2019. Three outstanding candidates will be brought to the UNC-Chapel Hill campus for interviews, and a final decision will be made in early April, 2019.

WHAT IS IT?
Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW’s) premier scholarship program. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is, American History: Our Hope for the Future. Prizes and scholarships can be awarded at the Post, District, state and national level. State winners receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., March 2-6, 2019, to tour the city, be honored by the VFW and its Auxiliary and receive their portion of $154,000 in national awards, the top scholarship being $30,000.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Any student in grades 9-12 may apply, as long as he/she is a US citizen or has applied for citizenship.
HOW TO APPLY:
Record an original 3-5 minute essay on an audio CD or a flash drive. Submit your typed essay, your recording, and your completed entry form to Mrs. Jones by noon on Tuesday, Oct. 31st. Our local VFW representative will come by the school to pick up our entries for judging. See the entry form (at website above) for additional details about the content of the essay.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
High school seniors who are National Honor Society (NHS) members in good standing of an affiliated NHS chapter are eligible to apply for the scholarship. There are no limits to the number of applications per school or chapter.
HOW TO APPLY:
All applications must be accompanied by three recommendations—one from the NHS adviser (Mrs. Musgrove), one from the school principal, and a third from a faculty member of the student's choice. Applications are not considered complete unless all components (the student application and three recommendations) have been completed and submitted.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Candidates must be applicants for freshman enrollment at UNC Charlotte in a baccalaureate program for the fall term immediately following their high school graduation. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and should present an excellent academic record, demonstrate a commitment to community service and possess a capacity for ethical leadership.
AWARD AMOUNT:
- An award for four years of tuition, room, board, books and mandatory fees
- An $8,000 grant to implement a service project of their own design
- Four summers of experiences including study abroad and NOLS
- Access to a professional development fund
